Breast & Cervical Cancer
Women of all ages are at risk of getting breast or cervical cancer, however, those statistics rise as women grow older. Those who are over the age of 40 are recommended to receive yearly mammograms in addition to their regular Pap exams to monitor their overall health and wellness. In the event your exams appear abnormal, not to worry – G.A. Carmichael Family Health Center and our expert team of providers will be by your side each step of the way.
For your convenience, we offer all of our services in both English and Spanish.
Our Partnership with Mississippi Breast & Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program
G.A. Carmichael puts a strong emphasis on women’s health and wellness. We are proud to work in collaboration with The Mississippi Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program, which strives for early detection of cancer in women at high risk.
Typically, these patients are uninsured, medically underserved, minority, and elderly women. These women are more likely to have advanced disease when symptoms appear, reflecting differences in access to screening and care.
With federal and matching funds, we offer Pap exam screening services to uninsured women between the ages of 40 and 64. Mammography screening is available through contracted providers to uninsured women between 50 and 64 years of age and older. Women 40 to 49 are eligible for screening mammograms when special funding is available. Special exceptions are available for women between the ages of 18 and 39, but they must receive prior approval.
Breast & Cervical Cancer Screening
Breast cancer and cervical cancer screenings are minimally invasive and allow our providers to get a detailed view of your breast and cervical health. The screenings we offer include:
A mammogram is essentially an X-ray image of the breasts. During a mammogram, you can expect your breasts to be compressed between two plates. This spreads the breast tissue, so your provider can get a detailed view to look for signs of cancer. Mammograms are safe, non-invasive, and generally only take a few minutes to complete.
Pap exams, also commonly called Pap smears, are preventive or diagnostic exams to detect cervical cancer. During your Pap exam, you can expect your provider to gently scrape the surface of your cervix. This will give them a sample of cells to check for signs of cancer. Most patients find this exam to be tolerable, as it only takes a few minutes to complete.
