A Word from the CEO
It is with great pleasure that I pen this letter as we seek to set the new direction for G.A. Carmichael Family Health Center, Inc.
The spirit of Dr. George Albert Carmichael, a 1933 graduate of Meharry Medical College located in Nashville, Tennessee, and a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., whose motto is, “Achievement in Every Field of Human Endeavor,” remains the driving force in the sustainability of this much needed health care facility. Two years after graduating, Dr. Carmichael returned to his hometown of Canton, Mississippi, where he practiced medicine in his community for more than 50 years.
This same commitment continues to live in the hearts and minds of the staff as we seek to continue a legacy of improving the health care status of all populations by providing quality, accessible, and affordable comprehensive primary and preventative health care for each individual, regardless of their ability to pay.
During the past several years, G.A. Carmichael Family Health Center, Inc. has seen its share of extreme challenges and seemingly insurmountable obstacles. However, Dr. Carmichael’s spirit of caring and compassion in providing services to his hometown community has turned these challenges and obstacles into opportunities for growth.
A new administration was given the opportunity to “restore the legacy of Dr. G.A. Carmichael.” This administration quickly saw the challenges, but also the great potential that continues to rest within the walls of these centers, located in Canton, Yazoo City, and Belzoni. We are also fortunate to have nine school-based centers in Madison and Yazoo Counties. With a commitment to “Operational Excellence,” this administration continues to move forward in adjusting and reestablishing systems that are proving to be successful in providing a firm foundation for growth.
As we move forward in removing the negative community stigmas once associated with the G.A. Carmichael Family Health Center, we respectfully ask for your support in giving us the opportunity to be your medical home by “Putting Your Family’s Health in Our Hands.” We seek to restore trust and gain your confidence by increasing the visibility of the Center through effective collaboration with local, state, regional, and national partners. Several partnerships, grant awards, and opportunities for collaborative leadership have emerged that have positioned the Carmichael Family Health Center to be a strong leader in the state.
Finally, it is my hope that we will continue to move in the direction that was established many years ago by an African American physician who cared about his hometown community and thought it was not robbery that all persons, regardless of ability to pay, had a right to quality healthcare.
In the spirit of Dr. George Albert Carmichael, we will continue to provide the quality care needed, as you “Put Your Family’s Health in Our Hands.”
